Contacted Coach Jud Logan through the Ashland University Athletic Dept website and asked if he would be willing to sign his July 1986 Track & Field News cover, and he said of course. He signed in an awesome gold Sharpie, and added an inscription of 4x Olympian and drew the Olympic rings, as well as a hammer. He was also generous enough to send along two color photos also signed and inscribed. I did some research before sending out the request and was surprised to find out he has a pretty impressive coaching tree.
Found Anthony Davis' autobiography If My Nikes Could Talk at the used bookstore and picked it up for $5.50. Has a great inscription with the "Notre Dame Killer" nickname. This is my second Anthony Davis signed piece. This book seems like it was published by
a small publishing house, but the forward to the book is written by Willie Mays.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-51170551738041095692018-08-25T19:47:00.000-07:002018-09-11T19:47:19.772-07:008/25/18 - Dennis Byrd

Found a signed copy of Dennis Byrd's autobiography Rise and Walk at a used bookstore for $2. The New York Jets player became paralyzed during a game in 1992, but eventually learned to walk again. Tragically he was killed in a car accident in 2016. Michael Johnson is one of the most famous track athletes of our generation. He is most well known for winning gold medals in the 200m and 400m at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He also has two other Olympic gold medals. He is still the 400m world record holder.

Back when I lived in Texas, I actually saw Michael working out at the SMU track. This was probably around 1995.

I sent three Track & Field News magazines for his signature. He actually has more covers, but I didn't want to be overly presumptuous. I sent them in care of his performance training center in Texas. They had warned that he travels often so he may not respond quickly. It took almost two years but I got them back today. The office staff called me to apologize for how long it took and to confirm that my mailing address was still the same.
Martha Sharp is a Women's Basketball Hall of Fame coach from Texas Tech University, where she won the 1993 NCAAW title with Sheryl Swoopes. I found her signed autobiography at the used bookstore for $2.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-50411289762519039932015-07-03T18:38:00.001-07:002015-07-04T09:11:24.773-07:007/3/15 - More Used Bookstore Finds (James Blake, Leigh Steinberg, Lou Holtz)

Again I picked up a few more signed books at the used bookstore. I don't know much about James Blake, but I found his signed autobiography and picked it up for $5 (less $3 off coupon on total purchase). The personalization part of the autograph looks almost like a child's writing.

I found super agent Leigh Steinberg's signed autobgraphy for $5 also. I already own a copy of this book, but I thought a signed version would be a nice addition to my collection. He also added the famous line from Jerry Maguire (which was loosely based on him), "Show me the $".

I am a fan of Notre Dame football, especially during the Lou Holtz years, so I have read a few books on that era. I'm not sure what to think of Coach Holtz, but I found a signed copy of his book for $5. The autograph looks printed on, but when you look at the back of the page, the ink has soaked thru to varying degrees so I assume it's authentic. If anyone else who has a copy of this book could verify that, I'd be grateful.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-65383437833555610692015-05-23T14:52:00.000-07:002015-07-06T07:38:43.927-07:005/23/15 - More Used Bookstore Finds (Apolo Ohno, Amy Alcott, Steve Saint and Mincaye, Frank Pastore)

I picked up a few more books at the used bookstore. I happened to find three signed books.

Apolo Ohno has won 8 Olympic medals i ice skating. He's also known for winning Dancing With the Stars, and also Subway commercials. This book was $5 but I had a coupon for $3 off my total purchase so it was somewhat cheaper.
Amy Alcott has won 5 LPGA majors and 29 tournaments overall, and is in the Gold Hall of Fame. She is a local product from Los Angeles. This was another $5 purchase.

Steve Saint is the son of Nate Saint, who was one of the missionaries who were killed, along with Jim Elliot, in South America. The book is also signed (fingerprint) by Mincaye, who was one of the Indians who killed the missionaries but later accepted Christ and became part of the family. This was a $1 purchase.
Frank Deford was a longtime columnist for Sports Illustrated Magazine, as well as an author of many books and the one time Editor in Chief of the National Sports Daily. Found an autographed copy of Steve Lyons' autobiography for $1 at the used bookstore (actually found two signed copies, anyone interested in buying the second one?). Steve is probably best known for pulling his pants down while standing on first base during a game. I'm not expecting this book to be exactly high brow reading but it might end up being humorous.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-90364826108109072502014-03-07T16:00:00.000-08:002014-03-07T16:00:24.598-08:003/3/14 - Bill Iffrig

Although definitely not a sports figure, I was surprised to get a book signed in the mail by S. Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A. I received the book for free thru Bookmooch, and the inside cover was signed by Mr. Cathy. I have always admired his company's Christian values and had previously read another book by him. Mr. Cathy's favorite verse is Proverbs 22:1 - A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-6225899034085010812013-12-24T07:42:00.000-08:002013-12-24T07:42:07.788-08:0012/23/13 - Jim Nantz

Today is American Express Small Business Saturday, where they encourage you to shop at local small businesses by offering a $10 statement credit if you spend at least $10 on your Amex card. So I ventured down to my favorite $1 Bookstore and bought ten books, in essence for free. One of the books I purchased was Chad Hennings' book It Takes Commitment. It was signed on the inside, along with a Bible verse inscription for Philipians 4:13 - I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-89902249608144434322013-11-29T19:22:00.001-08:002013-11-29T19:22:35.125-08:0011/29/13 - Lance Deal

Track and field is a second class sport in the United States, and hammer throwing is a second class event in the sport. Both of these facts are unfortunate, especially since it is one of my favorite events. Lance Deal is the American record holder in the event, and was the Olympic silver medalist in 1996 in a sport where Americans traditionally do not fare well. I sent him an autograph request through the University of Oregon, where he is employed. He was kind enough to also send a quick note, and inscribed his autograph with his American record distance.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-53016175554182484932013-11-10T20:18:00.001-08:002013-11-10T20:18:37.931-08:0011/9/13 - Pat Williams

Purchased a book by former Orlando Magic executive Pat Williams for a $1 at the used bookstore. The book talks about leadership principals from Michael Jordan. In addition to his NBA work, he is a motivational speaker.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-46731559536082232532013-10-20T12:58:00.003-07:002013-10-20T12:58:40.779-07:0010/20/13 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

I picked up Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's book A Season on the Reservation at the used bookstore. It was priced at a dollar but I had a 15% off coupon so it only cost me 85 cents! Not bad considering signed copies of this book are selling for around $75 online.

I also picked up a couple of other signed books: Another signed copy of Roy Firestone's Up Close, and a book on the 1998 USA Women's Olympic Hockey Team called Crashing the Net. Unfortunately it appears that signed copies of Up Close are fairly inexpensive online, so I doubt I can sell it. As far as Crashing the Net, it is signed by the author, who I mistakenly thought was a player on the team but is not. Shows you how much I know about women's hockey.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-15377899487039050882013-09-21T17:26:00.000-07:002013-09-23T08:10:44.038-07:009/21/13 - Texas A&M 12th Man

This is the inside cover of No Experience Required, a book about Texas A&M Football's 12th Man. I bought it used on Amazon for 70 cents. The book is oversized like a yearbook, and like a yearbook, it came with a bunch of signatures. Eight total signatures: Tom Bevans, Larry "Butch" Motley, Garry Sorrell, Brian Edwards, Dennis Mudd, Robert Crouch, Dean Berry, and a beautiful bold signature in gold Sharpie by Coach Jackie Sherrill. I love how the gold on burgundy looks. It turns out some of the players had also signed in other places within the book where their photos appeared, so in total there were 11 signatures.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8602869065735463580.post-56015489517880931842013-06-04T13:39:00.000-07:002015-07-06T07:39:18.292-07:002013 (various dates) - $1 Bookstores Although recently my autographed Sports Illustrated collection has come to a halt, my collecting of sports autographs has not. I credit this to my new, somewhat related hobby of collecting autographed sports books. I have always enjoyed reading sports books since I was young, and now I have enough shelf room to be able to buy and keep as many books as I wish. Combine that with my recent discovery of $1 bookstores, and that spells a recipe for disaster. There are three or four $1 bookstores within reasonable driving distance of my home, so I have made it a habit to visit each one every couple of months. Not only do I find great books for a dollar each, but every once in a while I get lucky and find one that has been autographed by the author. As far as the books go, they may not be books I'd necessarily purchase on their own merits, but if it has been signed, I'll definitely pick it up for a buck. These are the signed books I've picked up recently:

Steve Bartkowski - Retired quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. Looks like a pretty serious book about spiritual discipline and growth. his favorite Bible verse is Galations 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Rolf Benirschke - Retired kicker for the San Diego Chargers. This is an autobiography of his fight with ulcerative colitis. I've actually picked up six different signed copies of this book, so I'm trying to sell the extras on eBay.

Roy Firestone - Famous sports interviewer. He signed a copy of his 1991 book Up Close and Personal, which was the name of his television show. This was an interesting read with stories of the many sports personalities he had interviewed on his show. I ended up enjoying the book so much that I picked up his second book, which was pretty good as well.
Dick Hoyt took up running at 37 years of age, pushing his son in a modified jogging stroller. They have run 70 marathons together and have completed 6 Ironman Triathlons.
